Quitting hosting forever

For those who come to this blog for Dojo/Ajax discussions, this is a rant I had to get off my chest, so feel free to skip.

For the past year, I hosted my Dojo powered search engine,, with an Irish host (I’m in Dublin, Ireland) called They were, and still claim to be, the largest hosting provider in the country, so I thought they were a safe bet.

The hosting solution came with some nice tools, and easily installed applications like WordPress, so I thought I’d made a good choice.

How wrong I was. have to be the least reliable web host I have ever come across.  My website would inexplicably go down multiple times every week!!  Each time I complained ( and I complained often), I was told that routine maintenance was being performed on the server.

How often do these machines have to be restarted?  I know other hosts that only restart a couple of times a year, or even less, and these outages are announced weeks in advance.  With Register365 I never knew when the site would be available and when it wouldn’t.

To top it all off, a few times when my site was down, I went to raise a support ticket and the entire site was down!  If they can’t even keep their own site up and running,  I doubt they put much effort into the uptime of my little website.

So…. based on the recommendation of a work colleague, I’ve switched over to an English host,, which actually publish the uptime of their servers – my colleagues site last went down for a scheduled kernel upgrade about 8 months ago for a few minutes.  Register365 refused to offer any guarantee of availability when I questioned them about it on the phone, even though on their main page they have an image declaring they give “maximum uptime”, whatever that means.  They also refused to turn on something as simple and basic as resource compression for JavaScript and CSS files, with no reason given.  Now that I have my own hosted Ubuntu install, I can set it up however I like.


Anyway, I’m hoping the availability for will be improved by this move.  The DNS is being transferred at this very moment, and should hopefully be complete very soon.

If there’s something to be learned, it’s that expecting quality of service from an Irish organisation is a very risky step, even from a company as prominent as this one. So often in this country I see “shoddy workmanship”, to borrow a phrase, with no apology or attempt to rectify the matter, and certainly with no one accepting the blame.  The IT sector is unfortunately not immune to this irritating Irish trait.

Stay far away from register365!

    The servers you are referring to are the old legacy hosting servers, they aren’t the most reliable servers on the planet. However, we now have a new much more reliable load balanced hosting cluster available. It’s the same hosting technology that we use in the UK, the same technology that has won us the ‘best shared hosting provider’ award at the ISPA’s two years running.

    Thanks for the reply. However, it is unfortunate that your support engineers could not have responded with such honesty over a year ago. I have moved my site to it’s new host and transferred the DNS name servers, so I plan to allow my hosting account with Register365 lapse in the coming few days.

    For the sake of Register365’s other customers, I hope you automatically move their sites to the more solid hosting clusters, but I am very satisfied with my new host and intend to stick with them.

    Thank you for thsi article! Made my decision in choosing a new host so much easier!

    I was with IEInternet who were very reliable, but want €150 for 1 year hosting with 20 megs (YES, TWENTY MEGS!) and 150 for domain renewal! (After showing them other rates they were willing to go to 200 yoyo for hosting and renewal, but this is still much more than the others)

    @Shay… wow what a rip off.

    I’ve also found register365 a pain in the butt at times, especially having to manually move from legacy hosting to their newer ‘designer’ hosting.

    I’ve found Blacknight are pretty decent (once you get used to the control panel). seem OK too.

    I moved to Blacknight just over a year and a half ago.
    Last December 15th my VPS package went down and was out for 2 days or more (I moved all my clients to Dediserve) following a phone call to Aidan McCarron. He had me up and running in 30 Minutes.

    Blacknight really dropped the ball on this one as they had no backup’s of my VPS and I lost almost everything.

    I lost quite a few customers over this issue.

    I rue the day I ever joined register365. Seems the entire place is run by monkeys since they were taken over by Namesco. The control panel is a complete joke. Using the terms “AdvancedHost” or “DesignerHosting” for their products is not only laughable but a complete lie – there is nothing either advanced or designer about their tooling. I’ve moved almost all of my hosting to GoDaddy now. Even tho’ they’re not 100% reliable in their uptime they provide WAY more control over the hosting account than do register365.

    I run a number of different sites both privately and professionally. I’ve used a number of different hosting providers over the years and I can say with complete confidence that register365 is without doubt the worst hosting provider I’ve ever had the misfortune of dealing with.

    I’m a web designer and I’ve been forced to use Register365 because my client had already signed up to them. It has been a complete nightmare so far. Doing anything is a hassle. For your own sake of that of your web designer, please choose someone else.

    rubbish they have been taking money out of my account since 2011 without my knowledge until today. I got an email from them the other day saying that I have to automatically renew and will take the money out of my c/card account. They let my know this 2 days ago and when I tried to cancel my account they say I need to give them 7 days notice before my renewal day which is in 2 days time.
